People and Places We Know and Like

We got our first gig from the Phoenix Cultural Centre in Woking. This is now the Fiery Bird in Woking, an upcoming new venue in Church Street. A number of us have played their regular open mic slots on a Monday.

We have a number of side projects as well:

Mother of Order are Martin and Cath. This is a serious, folky project, currently working on material from and about the Lancashire Cotton Famine.

Martin and Monica as the name suggests is Martin and Monica, providing daytime concerts for a variety of venues, such as care homes as well as tuition for individuals or groups. Martin and Monica as ‘The Ukonoclasts’ also cover progressive material (King Crimson, Radiohead etc.) on the uke.

And we are all members of Guildford’s finest Ukejam, as are the fantastic Nefarious Picaroons.

Lucy Wise is a talented Ukulele player from Australia, she puts most of us to shame with her playing ability! (We make up for it with enthusiastic amateurism… erm… that’s supposed to sound better than that!) Some of us saw her when she visited the UK with the Spooky Men’s Chorale. You can find her on facebook.

This is an interesting project: pioneering a UK made banjo in honour of Ernest Shackleton

We’ve also a sot spot for Kate Micucci, part of (potentially NSFW) Garfunkel and Oates, who plays the uke as part of that duo. She has also appeared in ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Scrubs’. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that ‘ukulele makes us horny’.
